236% Productivity Boost

I wanted to get a metric on how our implementation of Claude was impacting our team's productivity. We have a diverse team working on different client systems without a single consistent output metric. So I had to devise a way to measure. I went with GitHub commits - comparing August to December last year against January to March this year. It's not a perfect metric; a commit doesn't always equate to productivity. But comparing a developer to themself gives useful data. Their individual commit habits haven't changed by implementing Claude; so comparing the same person across two periods gives a fair read on output.

These are the results:

• Dev 1: 83 → 285 commits per month (+343%)
• Dev 2: 28 → 88 (+314%)
• Dev 3: 66 → 118 (+178%)
• Dev 4: 75 → 129 (+172%)
• Dev 5: 18 → 31 (+172%)

Average: 236% increase in productivity.

I find that remarkable. I could instinctively feel that productivity had risen dramatically. My own estimate was that my productivity was up 2 to 3 times. But to see that instinct quantified is quite rewarding. More than three times the output. Without losing quality. Not running in like a cowboy - risk-managed, supportable, sustainable solutions within our existing framework. That result isn't just because we engaged with AI; it's because of HOW we chose to engage.
